……….Credit for recording most of these newspaper entries must first go to Lorna Johnston, who sat for hours in front of a micro-film reader at the Brockville Public Library in the 1980s, and recorded by hand each time she came across reference to a marriage.  In addition she recorded each birth and death that was published in the pages of the Brockville Recorder from 1830 to 1868.

……….Later, Lorna’s notes were typed out carefully by a few volunteers of the Leeds and Grenville Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society onto Gestetner stencils and published in booklets for sale. My part has been to select a few Brockville-related marriages from their booklets and key them into this WEBlog page.  It really takes many hours on all the part of all those involved.

All issues of the Brockville Recorder are missing between 9 January 1840 and 27 July 1843.  Lost in a fire?

  1. Elizabeth Mallabon says:

This information is critical for anyone researching their family history. My thanks to Lorna Johnston and all who worked on transcribing the micro-fiche records. I would like to obtain a copy of the death notices published in the Brockville Recorder between 1861 and 1868. Where may I obtain a copy of this booklet?

    Thank you.

  2. Ashley says:

Im not searching for history on my family but yet on the james and Elizabeth Hall family as I live in there original home and have had encounters with there spirits recently as well as there children or possibly others children from that era being the 1820’s. I have had paranormal activists in the home recently and we indeed come into contact with james and Elizabeth but also someone else not of there family. I am curiuos as to whether they had any children or not as I have a small car that rolls from time to time across the floor in my loft and I have heard childrens laughter in the loft as well as throughout the home. I currently have no children living with me.

  3. Doug Grant says:

I have just looked up this couple, James and Elizabeth E. HALL in the 1881 Brockville Census. James was was a ‘Tanner’ and is listed as 56 years old, born in Scotland in 1825. His wife Elizabeth was younger, 44 years old and born in Ontario in 1837. With them in 1881 was their daughter, Jennifer “Jenny” E. HALL , 10 years old, born in 1871. They were listed as members of the Presbyterian Church.

  4. by any chance do you show a marriage for Joseph Bigelow and Elizabeth Lucy Hogg? possibly 1840 -1850
